Blanket Ministry
 The Blanket Ministry is a fairly new ministry that is quickly growing in our church community. Individuals or groups meet to make fleece blankets, quilts or other style blankets, which are donated to Lakeview Hosptial, Alley Shoppe and shelters to provide warmth and comfort to the sick, children & adults that are facing surgery or chemotherapy, and others living in poverty or homelessness in our community. The majority of the blankets at the current time are being delivered to Lakeview Hospital, for patients that are scared or anxious about their treatment. Each blanket is lovingly made and delivered with a message that says, "You are loved! From Your Friends at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Mahtomedi". We then issue a number for the blanket and keep track of the individuals or groups that make each blanket. When the blanket is given to the recipient, the hospital records the recipient information and gives them the information about who made the blanket. We have received many thank you notes from patients young and old, letting us know how meaningful and comforting the blanket and message were to them at that time. It also helps establish ongoing ministry, communication and fellowship opportunities and lets the community know that St. Andrew's is a caring community.
We have currently made nearly 300 blankets this year and we have been requested to supply nearly 2000 per year! It's a wonderful ministry that people of all ages have been getting involved with...as young as preschool (4 year olds) to our wonderful seniors in their 80's...girls, boys, men & women!!! VBS made 120 blankets this year! In addition, Confirmation Camp made 50, Sunday School made 30 and the rest has come from small groups that meet on Wednesday mornings, individuals, girl scout troups, neighborhood fellowship groups, Bible Study groups, confirmation students, grandmas & moms working together with children...and more! It's really a wonderful ministry that is truly cross-generational.
Fleece is available to groups (such as girl scouts, small groups, Bible study groups), upon request and as supplies last. Fleece or blanket donations accepted and appreciated! We've negotiated the price of fleece with a vendor, making it approximately $4 to make a fleece blanket. We would love to keep this ministry going continuously, so donations of fleece or funds are desperately needed!
