Brass Band Hymnfest – Sanctuary

With guest conductor, composer and organist Philip Wilby, the event will feature nearly 100 brass players from Lake Wobegon Brass Band, the Sheldon Theatre Brass Band, Twin Cities Brass Band, Salvation Army’s Lakewood Temple Band, the Minneapolis Brass, and St. Andrew’s organist Bill Chouinard.

All are invited to this festival of hymns for British brass band and organ.  The festival will feature the settings of English composer Philip Wilby, with the composer taking turns on the podium and at the organ console.  As part of Wilby’s 10-day residence with the LWBB to premier a commission honoring the LWBB’s three founders, this event will give other brass bands across the area — nearly 100 players in all — a chance to interact and perform with a composer rightly referred to as “brass band royalty.”

Dr. Wilby’s early studies with Herbert Howells set him on his course as a composer.  Still an active church musician who has written a wealth of sacred music, Wilby taught composition, liturgy, and conducting at Leeds University for over 30 years.  He has proudly served as the musical associate of the legendary Black Dyke Band since 1990.  Wilby has been commissioned to write and six brass band test pieces — demanding, major works for national and international contests — an volume unmatched by any other composer.  Most of his major works for any ensemble are expressions of Christian faith, whether for brass or wind band, church or cathedral choir, organ, or the finest professional soloists or orchestra.
